Breed associations and cat clubs

If you are a purebred cat owner or are considering getting your first purebred cat, it is important to know that there are various breed associations and cat clubs operating around the world and in Estonia, whose mission is to ensure the purity of the breed, ethical breeding practices, and the well-being of cats.
These organizations are not merely formal associations—they form a community of cat lovers where knowledge is shared, shows are organized, and responsible cat ownership is promoted.

Breed associations create standards by which cats are evaluated and on the basis of which official breed certificates are issued. They also serve as a bridge between breeders and pet owners, helping to preserve the health, genetic diversity, and quality of cat breeds.

The most well-known international breed associations

FIFe’s tasks:

  • Regulates breeding and ensures that breeding is carried out in accordance with health and welfare requirements.
  • Standardizes cat breeds and publishes official breed standards.
  • Organizes international cat shows where official titles (e.g., Champion, International Champion, Supreme Champion) are awarded.

The FIFe system is popular throughout Europe, including Estonia, where it is represented by the Felix club.

TICA (The International Cat Association)

TICA is an international cat organization founded in the United States, with operations spanning the globe.
TICA is known for its innovative and flexible approach: in addition to traditional purebred cats, mixed-breed and domestic cats can also participate in its shows in a separate category.

The TICA system is characterized by:

  • A unique points-based scoring system where the cat collects points from different judges throughout the season.
  • An electronic registration system (breeder slip) that makes managing pedigrees and family trees easy.
  • International visibility – TICA cats and breeders are recognized worldwide.

In Estonia, TICA’s official representative is Esticat, which regularly organizes international exhibitions and offers support to breeders.

CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association)

The CFA is the largest cat organization operating in the United States, and its standards and titles are among the most prestigious in the world.
Although the CFA is less widespread in Europe than FIFe or the WCF, its influence on breeding and breed standards is significant.

CFA:

  • Focuses primarily on breeding quality and preserving breed characteristics.
  • Organizes international exhibitions and title competitions.
  • It has created one of the world’s most detailed pedigree registries, which helps track a cat’s family tree over several generations.

In Estonia, the CFA organization is represented by the Cleopella Cat Club.

WCF (World Cat Federation)

The WCF is one of the largest international cat organizations, bringing together clubs in more than 50 countries around the world.
Its system is flexible and international, suitable for both new breeders and experienced breeding programs.

WCF activities include:

  • Regulation of breeding and breed standards to ensure the welfare of cats and their purebred origin.
  • Organizing cat shows where cats are judged according to WCF standards and titles are awarded (e.g., Champion, International Champion, Grand International Champion).
  • Club members are offered support, training, and international contacts.

Several clubs in Estonia are members of the WCF, such as Cato, Fennica Cattus Ry (Estonian-Finnish cooperation club), Baltic Cat, and Selena Tiger.

Estonian breed associations and cat clubs

Clubs operating in Estonia:

  • WCF clubs: Cato, Fennica Cattus Ry (Estonia–Finland), Baltic Cat, Selana Tiger
  • TICA clubs: Esticat
  • FIFe club: Felix
  • CFA club: Cleopella

These organizations also cooperate with foreign partners so that Estonian breeders can participate in international exhibitions and put their breeding lines on the world map.
